  1. Working with Filtered Indexes Like a Pro (Michael Zilberstein)

Filtered indexes are a powerful feature that can make expensive queries run much faster. But as powerful as they are, filtered indexes bring with them lots of limitations most DBAs are unaware about. Those limitations can appear as unpleasant surprise in a production environment. After this session you will know what are those limitations and how you can overcome them, making efficient use of the filtered indexes feature.

Michael Zilberstein (Blog), database consultant and architect, 13 years of experience with SQL Server. Specializing in data-intensive applications in the broadest way - architecture, design and performance - both hardware and software. Besides SQL Server, Michael is passionate about hiking, chess and history.

  1. Columnstore Indexes – Advanced Questions and Answers (Matan Yungman,Madeira)

Columnstore is a very exciting technology that can boost the performance of our queries by orders of magnitude. However, like every technology, we have to use it the right way in order to achieve such a performance boost. We will start the presentation with a quick overview of the technology in order to bring everyone up to speed. After that, we will start asking questions that will help us understand how to master it. Among others, we will answer questions like: When will a Clustered Columnstore Index boost performance by orders of magnitude, and when it won’t help so much? How to defeat the “lazy” tuple mover? How to increase segment elimination? How to load data the right way? What should we do if we need a verification of data integrity? We will end the presentation with some speculations about the Columnstore-related features Microsoft will unveil in the next version of SQL Server.

Matan Yungman (Blog|Twitter) is the CTO of Madeira. He has over 10 years of experience working with SQL Server, and over that time period he has taken part in various challenging projects. Matan also co-hosts the SQL Server Radio show. He is passionate about SQL Server, technology and the SQL Server community.
