What is VSS and Why should I Care?

Ronen Ariely, Senior consultant & architect

Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is a group of COM interfaces. These interfaces implement a running environment to perform system backups while applications continue to write to the volume and lock files. Starting with SQL Server 2005, Microsoft provides support for VSS through the SQL Server VSS Writer service, which enables third-party backup applications to use the VSS framework in order to backup database files. In this session we will explain in general what Shadow Copy is and how it works. We will briefly demonstrate how to use the shell application "VssAdmin" to create, delete and list shadow copies, as well as how to use the SQL Server VSS Writer. We will also demonstrate how we can develop a small application for copying SQL Server files within a few minutes of work. This application will allow us to copy files without running a backup command and without the need to detach the database.

Things I have Learned in the PASS Summit

Guy Glantser, CEO Madeira Data Solutions

I had the pleasure to attend the last PASS Summit, which was held in Charlotte in October. It was my first time to attend the PASS Summit, and I had such a great time. In addition to meeting so many people from around the world, I learned so many things, such as interpretation of execution plans, implementation of filtered statistics, things you can find in the "system_health" event session, index internals, and more. In this session, I would like to share the things I learned with you.

About Guy:
Guy Glantser, Data Platform MVP, is the leader of the Israeli PASS local group and also the CEO and founder of Madeira Data Solutions. His career has been focused on the Microsoft Data Platform for the past 20 years, performing various database roles as either an on-site DBA, an external consultant or a speaker. Guy is involved in many activities in the Microsoft Data Platform community. He occasionally speaks at community events, such as PASS Summit, SQLBits, SQL Saturdays and user groups around the world. He also co-hosts the SQL Server Radio podcast.
