The Cardinality Estimator – Dubi Lebel (120 Minutes)

The SQL Server Query Optimizer uses a cardinality estimation process in order to find the best way to execute a query. It calculates several alternative plans, estimates the costs of each one of them, and then chooses the plan with the lower cost.

The cardinality estimation process is one of the basic rocks of the SQL Server query optimization process. Its stable version hasn’t been changed since version 7.0. SQL Server 2014 introduces the first major redesign of the SQL Server Query Optimizer cardinality estimation process.

In this session we will try to understand how cardinality estimation works, and what the primary changes made to the Cardinality Estimator in SQL Server 2014 are. We will also discuss whether this change might affect your performance, and how to troubleshoot plan quality regressions if and when they occur.
